if i enter at the beginning of an empty hangme.c

i get a flashing wait mouse cursor.

upon ^G

i see Fontifying region...(quit)  
but still no back to normal editing.
if i blindly type M-x fundamental-mode<ret>^g
i can get control back.

if i turn off options syntax highlighting no hang

this is with no .emacs init files on 
fedora release 21 emacs from the fedora 21 repository.
