I am using 64bit Ubuntu 9.04, but I can't reproduce it either..

neither the attached xemacs-crash.txt nor the attachment.tex, with or
without attached init.el

My locale is: zh_CN.UTF-8

Nope, even using the supplied init.el, I cannot reproduce. Do you have
any special locale settings in your environment? I'm using en_US.UTF-8.
I have the xemacs21-mule package installed, which is the one referenced
below.

I have made a virtual machine with Ubuntu 9.04, with all updates as of
today. Neither "xemacs" nor "xemacs -vanilla" crash when loading
xemacs-crash-4.txt. Therefore, something in init.el is causing the problem.

A question:

Have you tried replicating starting from "xemacs -vanilla" (which
bypasses all the Debian/Ubuntu-specific startup)? How about "xemacs -
no-autoloads"? (The latter may be useless for Stefan, since he won't be
able to easily use TeX modes in that case.)

Sorry, I *still* cannot replicate in XEmacs 21.4.21 or 21.4.22, on Gentoo
GNU/Linux (more or less bleeding edge) with an AMD64 CPU or Mac OS X (Leopard
10.5.7) with Intel CPU, with either xemacs-crash-4.txt or c2.tex. I'll ask
for help from Ubuntu users on xemacs-beta, but I don't have time or hardware
to install Ubuntu at this time.

This crash is easy to reproduce with a couple of files. The init.el is
attached and then you only need to load a utf8 file with these 3 bytes:

$ od -x /tmp/xemacs-crash-4.txt

OK, I've tried this with my usual build of 21.4.22 on Gentoo, and it
doesn't crash for me. I don't have time to rebuild to Ubuntu's spec,
let alone install Ubuntu, this week, but I will try to get on that
soon.

 > Open c2.tex, enable tex-mode and font-lock-mode,

By "tex-mode", do you mean the "old" tex-mode from tex-mode.el in the
texinfo package, or the tex-mode from AUCTeX? (C-h f tex-mode will
tell you what library it's from, and M-x locate-library RET <lib>.el
will tell you where it loaded from, and thus what package.)

By scroll down, you mean C-v or PageDown on the keypad? Or are you
using the scrollbars? Or repeated C-n or down-arrow?

 > The crash seems to be related to tex-mode and syntax highlighting.

That is consistent with the backtrace.

I narrowed down the crash to the attached file, c2.tex. After it is
opened, xemacs crashes consistently when trying to scroll down.

To reproduce: install xemacs21 21.4.21-1ubuntu3.1 from Ubuntu Hardy
on AMD64 (could be buggy also on other platforms, I have not tested).
Open c2.tex, enable tex-mode and font-lock-mode, scroll down, it crashes
when only a few lines are scolled. It never gets to the end of the file.
(I also renamed ~/.xemacs* and ~/.emacs* files to get clean settings)

The crash seems to be related to tex-mode and syntax highlighting.
If I change the name to .txt, it doesnt crash. If I enable tex-mode,
it also works ok, but with M-x font-lock-mode it coredumps.

the attached file will be of help.

Without a C backtrace, it's impossible to localize the problem.
We appreciate your report, and it is definitely of interest
because of the 64-bit platform, but I'm going to close it for
lack of diagnosable information. If you have a similar crash,
please reopen this bug.

Dear Bug Team!

I was asked to write a bug report to you after an xemacs session
crashed. I opened the file main.tex some days ago, left the editor
idle, and when I started typing again it crashed. It's a standard
install from Ubuntu 8.04 on the AMD64 platform.

This is the terminal output: [own comments in brackets]

$ xemacs21 main.tex
[application active for a few days]

Fatal error (11).

Your files have been auto-saved.
Use `M-x recover-session' to recover them.

Your version of XEmacs was distributed with a PROBLEMS file that may describe
your crash, and with luck a workaround. Please check it first, but do report
the crash anyway. Please report this bug by invoking M-x report-emacs-bug,
or by selecting `Send Bug Report' from the Help menu. If necessary, send
ordinary email to `xemacs-beta at xemacs.org'. *MAKE SURE* to include the XEmacs
configuration from M-x describe-installation, or equivalently the file
Installation in the top of the build tree.

*Please* try *hard* to obtain a C stack backtrace; without it, we are unlikely

[sorry, I had ulimit -c 0 set, so no coredump available]

to be able to analyze the problem. Locate the core file produced as a result
of this crash (often called `core' or `core.<process-id>', and located in
the directory in which you started XEmacs or your home directory), and type

  gdb /usr/bin/xemacs21 core

then type `where' at the debugger prompt. No GDB on your system? You may
have DBX, or XDB, or SDB. (Ask your system administrator if you need help.)
If no core file was produced, enable them (often with `ulimit -c unlimited'
in case of future recurrance of the crash.

Lisp backtrace follows:

  # (unwind-protect ...)
  # (catch #<INTERNAL OBJECT (XEmacs bug?) (opaque-ptr, adr=0x91b918) 0x9439d0> ...)
  # (unwind-protect ...)
